Project summary

Cleaning, degassing, demolition and clearance of a fourteen-tank storage farm holding residual hydrocarbon and chemical product, including bund removal, contaminated ground treatment and full regulatory close-out.

Scope of works

  • Residual product removal and sludge recovery
  • Tank cleaning and degassing certification
  • Floating and fixed roof tank demolition
  • Bund wall and containment removal
  • Underground pipework excavation
  • Ground remediation and validation sampling
The challenge

Several tanks held sludge whose composition was not fully characterised, and heel volumes proved considerably higher than the operator's records indicated once the first tanks were opened.

The bund floor had been repaired repeatedly over three decades, creating pathways for contamination to migrate below the containment slab.

Monsoon season fell within the programme window, with the risk of contaminated runoff leaving the bunded area during heavy rainfall.

Our approach

Sludge was sampled and characterised before removal in every tank, and the waste routing plan was revised twice as actual composition emerged. All streams were consigned under hazardous waste documentation to licensed treatment facilities.

Below-slab investigation was extended once the repair history was understood, delineating a wider impacted zone than initially assumed and preventing a partial remediation that would have failed clearance sampling.

A temporary containment and pumped-transfer system was installed ahead of monsoon onset, with all runoff collected, tested and treated before discharge. No uncontrolled release occurred during the season.

Demolition proceeded tank by tank behind gas-free certification, keeping the certified-clean footprint expanding progressively rather than opening the whole farm at once.

Plant deployed

Equipment mobilised against the engineered method for this programme. Where the correct machine was not in our own fleet, it was brought in rather than substituted.

  • Vacuum tankers and sludge recovery units
  • Cold cutting systems
  • Long-reach demolition excavators
  • Mobile water treatment plant
  • Continuous gas monitoring
